Ecological Monitoring

Wetland Surveys Ireland have undertaken ecological monitoring as part of both nature conservation and development led projects.

To demonstrate our experience in this area a selection of recent projects that we have worked on is presented below.

  • Bellacorick to Castlebar 110kV Overhead Line upgrade. Post-construction monitoring of habitat recovery. 2019
  • Hen Harrier and Curlew breeding surveys at Cloghboola Wind Farm, Knocknagoshel, County Kerry. 2019
  • Hen Harrier and Curlew breeding surveys at Dromadda Beg Wind Farm, Knocknagoshel, County Kerry. 2019
  • Monitoring of Kerry Slug populations during construction phase of wind farm, County Kerry. 2018-2019
  • Prepared a monitoring report for supplementary tree planting undertaken along the banks of the Bandon River SAC, south of Dunmanway, County Cork. 2018
  •  Monitoring environmental agricultural measures for farms within GLAS in the south-western region (Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Waterford). 2016–2018
  • Survey of overhead line development for possible Whooper Swan collision casualties. Weekly visits during late winter period. 2017
  • Ecological monitoring Wild Atlantic Way Discovery Points. Ecological Study of Visitor Movement Areas. Undertook detailed habitat and vegetation monitoring surveys at signature discovery points along the Wild Atlantic Way to provide baseline data against which future impacts can be assessed. 2016
  • Undertook an ecological appraisal of lands at Ballyellery. Aims of the assessment included determining if the lands support habitats or species listed on Annex I and Annex II of the EU Habitats Directive 2016
  • Undertook pre-construction field surveys to highlight potential terrestrial ecological constraints on site in Cork. Reviewed proposed Construction Method Statements (Risk Assessment Management)  and monitored vegetation clearance and other works at sensitive sites. 2016-2017
  • Monitoring environmental agricultural measures at ten farms included within Glas agri-environmental scheme. 2016-2017
  • Ecological monitoring Wild Atlantic Way Signature Discovery Points. Undertook detailed habitat and vegetation monitoring surveys at signature discovery points along the Wild Atlantic Way to provide baseline data against which future impacts can be assessed. 2015
  • Construction phase ecological monitoring of underground power cable wet heath re-instatement project, County Cork. 2015 
  • Construction phase ecological monitoring of 110kV Overhead line, County Cork. 2015
  • Prepared a bird monitoring report for the development of an overhead line from Shercock, Co. Cavan to Tullynamalra, Co. Monaghan. 2015
  • Prepared a breeding Hen Harrier survey along a proposed underground cable route from Ballyvouskil to Coomtaggart, Co. Cork. 2015
  • Undertook collision searches at an operational wind farm at Ballycadden, Bunclody, Co. Wexford.  2015
